Nicholas Hanson (b. 1995, UK) presents a series of new sculptures that the artist made in his hometown of Nottingham between 2019 and 2021. Ethereal and personal, bizarre and beautiful, this series of works pay homage to his father, the late Daniel Hanson, the internationally renowned designer of quality apparel who died in 2019 at the age of 62. Challenging our ideas of comfort-ware by reinterpreting luxurious materials, Hanson anthropomorphises fine silks into surreal masks, playing with bricolage, orderly chaos, and the unintentional interaction of materials. Less for the fashion crowd, more from antiquity, this collection of reimagined childhood moments and deteriorating memories forces an eerie engagement between loss and memory.

Cut from the Same Cloth is comprised of three-dimensional ‘collages’ that reflect Nicholas's own experience as a trained tailor, designer, artist and skate boarder. Having trained under the tutelage of his father from the age of 13, by the time he left for art college in Antwerp at 19 he had already gained many of the skills and crafts of tailoring. The language of thread, cloth, pattern and form is central to the artist's work, utilising off cuts from the family business workshop as his medium. The artwork is created from his wondrous collection of found and discarded objects. Some of these curious-finds have sentimental value and link to his family history; other stuff he picked up on his skate trips around Europe. These found objects combined with tailored and upholstered forms create characterful sculptures that suggest surreal narratives. Calling our attention to time experienced as regeneratively stitched and woven beings. While Nicholas Hanson’s work is informed by recent and personal history of loss, its generosity and openness is very much a celebration of life, offering a playful context that invites us to question our own understanding of loss and legacy.
